Alternative Sources of Energy Essay - 829 Words
As the population continues to increase day after day, so does the demand for oil and other natural resources. Eventually we will get to a point where we will need to find different ways of efficiently producing energy at a low cost. Twenty to thirty years ago it was hard to imagine what sources of energy (other than obvious possibilities like solar panels and windmills) that could efficiently supply the world. The advancement of technology today is opening new doors in the energy field that are likely to change the way we think about energy. With so many different sources of energy that are prevalent around the world, the challenge is found in harvesting and securing the energy at its source, and doing so in an efficientâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Clearly there are many difficulties that would have to be addressed including maintenance, air space issues, safety, etc, but flying wind farms are a potential source of future energy. wind.png Another form of energy that could become v ery useful and resourceful in the near future is the transformation of human waste into energy. An article by Janet Zimmerman describes a process being developed by an engineering firm named UC Riverside. The new process uses heat and pressure to turn human waste into clean energy, saving millions of dollars and reducing pollution in the process. This idea has the potential to change the energy industry since there will never be a shortage of human waste. The first step of the process pumps a combination of municipal sewage, sawdust and water into a pressurized reactor that is heated to almost 1,400 degrees. (Zimmerman). A senior development engineer with UC Riverside, Junior Castillo, explained that the extreme heat transforms the mixture into different gasses like carbon dioxide, methane, and carbon monoxide. In the later stages, these gasses are converted into substitutes for natural gasses. The goal is to eventually use the gas product to heat the reactor to increase efficiency . Although this process is still under development, they plan to have a functioning plant running within the next fiveShow MoreRelatedAlternative Sources Of Alternative Energy Sources1123 Words à |à 5 PagesRough Draft: Alternative Energy Sources Imagine a world where sea levels have risen, a world where extreme weather happens more often and with more intensity, and a world that has very few species of animals left due to mass extinctions. A Confederacy of Dunces as a Criticism of Higher Education Free Essays
Whether in an effort to become more educated and to obtain more lucrative jobs or due to the need for better education in an increasingly technological job market, the United States has seen a rising trend in the percentage of individuals who choose to attend college and graduate school. Not only has the number of individuals seeking higher education increased, but criticism of higher education has increased as well. Common criticism has included the idea of colleges and universities being more concerned with financial aspects than with their students, as well as the idea of students using higher education not to become more educated individuals, but to increase their chances of earning higher wages after college or graduate school. We will write a custom essay sample on A Confederacy of Dunces as a Criticism of Higher Education or any similar topic only for you Order Now A Confederacy of Duncesââ¬â¢ satirical focus on education and learning provides examples of these and other criticisms of higher education. More specifically, the characters of the story show the reader the educated are not always the ones who fare the best in terms of their emotional well-being and their ability to function in society. In looking at the characters in the novel there seems to be an inverse relationship in terms of the amount of education a character has received in comparison to that characterââ¬â¢s ability to function normally in society (to not cause others distress, to contribute physically and mentally, etc. ) For example, Ignatius has the greatest amount of education and proves himself the most socially backwards, followed by Myrna, then by Mrs. Levy, an overconfident psychologist with no more than community college experience. Also, the reader is shown that the most educated characters are also the most satirized and laughable characters in the story. Two obvious characters, the characters of Ignatius Reilly and Myrna Minkoff, illustrate some of the possible detrimental effects of higher education. Although it is difficult to comment on Myrna, evidence is provided throughout the novel that portrays Ignatius as a much more sociable and pleasant individual before his days at college. For both of these characters education has distorted their view of society in such a way that it makes them miserable to be part of such an ââ¬Å"abominable and debauchedâ⬠society. Ignatius complains throughout the novel about otherââ¬â¢s lack of intelligence and their supposedly ââ¬Å"distortedâ⬠view of society. Not only has Ignatius and Myrnaââ¬â¢s view of society been affected by higher education, but their ability to function socially in society has been affected as well. Neither character is able to maintain a long lasting relationship with others than themselves. Also, Ignatius has difficulty finding employment and has even greater difficulty keeping any job which he obtains. Myrna herself would undoubtedly face similar difficulty if she did not receive substantial funding from her father. Finally, Myrnaââ¬â¢s view on sex, one that clashes with the social norm, and her propensity to discuss this subject almost gets her raped by a university janitor. Another character who is highly involved in academia, Professor Talc, helps to illustrate the criticism of college being a business for those who run it and by those who work for it. Professor Talc himself admits that he does not know or teach much at all-that his lectures are vague, that he is only popular because of his humor, and that he is not qualified to teach college level Social Studies. Talcââ¬â¢s disinterest in educating his students supports the idea that many professors view their work only as a secure job with substantial benefits. Another example of Professor Talc illustrating criticism of higher education comes in the episode of his meeting with a female student. While Talc originally believes that the student set up the meeting either because of her interest in his class or because of her interest in him, the actual motive of the student is only to find out the grade of her most recent project. This episode represents the common criticism of higher education simply providing a means to an end. While the primary goal of a college education was at one time to become a more educated individual, this goal has shifted to receiving good grades, obtaining a good job, making a lot of money, etc. In the authorââ¬â¢s final attempt to satirize, and therefore criticize, higher education, Professor Talc, the novelââ¬â¢s symbol of higher education itself, ends the story being mocked and ridiculed by both teachers and students. In comparing the less-educated characters of the story, the reader is shown that although these characters may not be the most materially well-off or have the greatest intellectual capacity, they do finish the story as the most emotionally, and in some cases financially, stable characters of the story. Also, although they are not formally educated, these characters are able to function well in everyday, practical situations. One such uneducated character who finishes the novel better off than many of the educated characters is Ignatiusââ¬â¢ mother. By the end of the story, Mrs. Reilly is free of Ignatius, who oppresses her social interests and forces her to cook and clean, and has a chance at marrying Claude Robichaux, a well-off and apparently sympathetic man. Mrs. Reilly has little education and therefore seems to expect and desire little. Unlike those who desire a good job and a good income simply because they attended college, Mrs. Reilly is satisfied by more simple pleasures: the company of friends, dancing, bowling etc. Her simple pleasures illustrate the ideal of the Zen road to affluence-if you do not desire a lot, it takes very little to be happy. In comparing this to higher education, again many of those individuals who attend college and/or graduate school do expect and desire more: a more lucrative job, more socially affluent friends, a wealthier, more attractive spouse. Higher education may also perpetuate the need to be competitive-the need to work increasingly hard in order to get ahead. Evidence of this idea can be found in the fact that an increasing percentage of the population attend college and/or graduate school than in years past. No longer is a high school education sufficient to secure a well-paying job. Both Darlene and Jones also prove to be less educated characters who end the story in better emotional and financial situations than many of those characters who have received some type of higher education. Both Darlene and Jones finish the story with better, more secure employment as well as newfound happiness. Darlene, who is portrayed in the novel as somewhat flaky, demonstrates the idea that ââ¬Å"ignorance is blissâ⬠. As a result of her lack of intelligence, Darlene expects very little, and her highest goal is only to be a well-paid exotic dancer. After reaching this goal at the close of the novel, Darleneââ¬â¢s exuberance again shows that if one does not have a lot, it will not take much to become content. Although also appearing uneducated, Jones proves to have a great deal of common sense that allows him to function in society. In this way Jones provides the reader with evidence that knowledge gained through higher education is not the only type of knowledge one needs in order to be successful and achieve goals. In comparing Ignatius with Jones the reader notices this difference between ââ¬Å"book smartsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"street smartsâ⬠and their use in functioning in society. Using his common sense, an intelligence that Ignatius clearly lacks, Jones can tell when whites are scared of him, and is also able to figure out Lana Leeââ¬â¢s scam, using it to maintain job security and eventually to get a more desirable job. In an apparent attempt to both satirize and criticize higher education, John Kennedy Toole creates characters in A Confederacy of Dunces who offer proof that the business of higher education perpetuates competition and the desire to achieve more than others. This increased competition in turn causes both stress and an increased likelihood of falling short of set goals, both eventually leading to unhappiness. Also, as seen in the character Ignatius, the intelligence gained as a result of college or graduate school may cause the educated to look down upon and even to dislike the members of society with average or below average intelligence. The author further mocks education by leaving each character in a particular position at the end of the novel. While the uneducated characters tend to end up better off, the educated characters generally prove unhappy by the end of the story. Beloved 3 Essay Example For Students
Beloved 3 Essay A TREE CAN BE A HEAVY LOAD TO CARRYThroughout our lives, we have all had our own ââ¬Å"treeâ⬠carved onto us. Whether it is on our back, in our heart, in our soul, our hands or feet, we can all share the knowledge and pain our lives have borne. So there is an understanding of how and what Sethe has had to bare throughout her life, and every branch of her tree has its individual story to tell. Not only has she been affected by the choices she has had to make, but also everyone who has come in contact with her have been affected. One branch of Setheââ¬â¢s tree tells of her killing her baby and another tells of the guilt she has felt throughout the years and the near destruction of her from the haunting of her dear ââ¬Å"Belovedââ¬â¢sâ⬠ghost. Another tells of her boys running away and another tells of the neglect that her younger daughter has had to face.Because of this guilt, she almost paid for it with her life. However, the stages that her mind her took through wit h coming to terms with her involvement in Belovedââ¬â¢s murder, her redemption of that burden, and near madness were the elements that helped to guide her through the guilt. From the redemption of her guilt, Sethe has learned that when a branch of her tree has weltered a little, which means that her family bond is not as strong, the tree does not die, because it has a strong root. A root that represents all of the sorrowââ¬â¢s of her life, but she is still strong and is willing to fight to get rid of the weltering branches and sprout new ones, which represents new hope, new life and new beginning. In comparison with Sethe, many of us could probably relate to Sethe and the tragedies and devastations she has had to face. Like her, we and the people around us have had to face death, neglect, uncertainties, self-doubt or inner demons. Sethe explains that she took her babyââ¬â¢s life in order to save her from the treacherous world that she would have greeted. She did not want her baby to grow up in slavery like she had to, or starve because she did not have any milk to feed her. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦.and I could not let her nor any of em live under schoolteacher. That was outâ⬠(163). But was that really an excuse to use for what she had done by taking her childââ¬â¢s life? Paul D, who was her long-lost friend for eighteen years, disputes her reasoning for killing her child. He states,The prickly, mean-eyed Sweet Home girl he knew as Halleââ¬â¢s girl was obedient(like Halle), shy(like Halle) and work-crazy(like Halle). He was wrong. This here Sethe was new. The ghost in her h ouse did not bother her for the very same reason a room-and board witch with new shoes was welcome. This here Sethe talked about love like any other woman; talked about the baby clothes like any other woman, but what she meant could cleave the bone. This here Sethe talked about safety with a handsaw. This here new Sethe didnââ¬â¢t know where the world stopped and she began. Suddenly he saw what Stamp Paid wanted him to see more important than what Sethe had done was what she claimed. It scared himâ⬠(164). Paul D was bewildered and outraged by Setheââ¬â¢s actions towards a child and found it unforgivable. Because she killed her child others deemed her a demon, incapable of love, and her younger daughter began believing that was true. She was deemed insane and others around her felt the devastation of her demise. Denver, who is Setheââ¬â¢s younger daughter, lived in fear after learning the truth about the horrific actions of her mother. She wondered what would stop her m other from killing her, if killing was so easy for her. .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 , .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 .postImageUrl , .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 , .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981:hover , .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981:visited , .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981:active { border:0!important; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981:active , .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981 .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7e8fb5c30a652fea01b8ea535cfcc981:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Mexico EssayI love my mother but I know she killed one of her own daughters, and tender as she is with me, Iââ¬â¢m scared of her because of it. The Dilemmas of Counter-Bokoharamism Free-Samples for Students
Question: Discuss about the Dilemmas of Counter-Bokoharamism. Answer: The dilemmas of counter-bokoharamism The federal government of Nigeria has faced a number of human rights dilemmas in its efforts to neutralize the effects of Boko-Haram militancy in Nigeria. The militancy has resulted to mayhem, criminal activities against humanity such killings and wanton destruction of property and the government is grappling with how best they can handle the operation to bring to an end these criminal acts of the militia while at same time observing/conforming to human rights issues. This paper will therefore give my opinion on what I will do differently and why on myriad of approaches and dilemmas the government is facing in efforts to counter the group. Between Counter Boko haram and human rights. The Nigerian federal government has largely taken military approach in countering the militia. I think the best way should have been the use of special police trained in military operation. Because military mostly fight with heavy artillery and ammunitions that will definitely spill over to civilians. The group lives within Nigeria where we have other peace loving citizens leaving within the vicinity. Therefore it is likely that when military launches attacks civilians could be the main causality because militias know how to hide women and children especially dont. So there is need for special police force that can also integrate well with civilians and attack the militia with very minimal impact to the civilians. (Sampson, 2013) Between negotiation and containment While the federal government is constantly reminded of the question How can you negotiate with terrorists? whenever it attempts to do so I think sometimes the security of the nation is more important than holding on to punishments. If the side can commit and implement agreements without giving conditions then negotiation is better way to resolving the conflicts. The federal government of Nigeria have negotiated with Niger delta before. Although this group has support with majority of the people because their issues revolve around development, equity in resource sharing and environmental while Boko haram is more of ideological advancements of sharia rule in Nigeria, the government can still negotiate with Boko haram with view of dismantling the militia, and avoid having civilian paying with their lives when the two forces are combating each other. This should however be made clear to them (Boko haram) that the government can only negotiate with them if there is no conditions while at the same time government sustaining the special police assault. (Sampson, 2013) Between Mosaic justice and amnesty/rehabilitation While it is important that people who of have killed innocent civilians are brought to book on human rights account it is also important to look at the bigger picture for the future. The boko haram can be arrested and tried and sentenced but others will also continue using human beings as shields when they are cornered or even abducting and killing others therefore its a cycle with no end. Those who killed people yesterday arraigned to court today and those who will kill people today will be arraigned to court the tomorrow, and thats real circle with no end in sight. The Nigerian government can consider extending amnesty to Boko-haram militants who will surrender and accept to be taken for rehabilitation. Not all militias are hardcore criminals I am sure there are those who will embrace this strategy and surrender because they could be tired with fighting for years on end. Between law enforcement and Judiciary Police officers accuse judicial officers of releasing arrested Boko haram members easily. The Judicial officers on the other hand the evidence brought before them were shoddy and their hand are tied they just have to follow the law. This as resulted to police arresting the militia and executing them in extra-judicial killings or sometimes holding them in cells for very long time without producing them to the court of law. I think the best way here is to retrain the police officers on collection and handling of evidence before they are produced in the court. The judicial officers also aught to collaborate with the police and sensitise them on what kind of evidence hold water for them. This would avoid scenarios where the police feel undone after working hard to arrest criminal only to be released for lack of enough evidence. The extra-judicial killings only serve to aggravate the problem more and inspire retaliatory attacks with civilians the main causality. (Sampson, 2013) References Finch, V. and McGroarty, J. (2010). Dharma in Buddhism and Hinduism Essay Example
Dharma in Buddhism and Hinduism Essay Example Dharma in Buddhism and Hinduism Paper Dharma in Buddhism and Hinduism Paper The beginning of this class consists of two sections, Hinduism and Buddhism, both of which we have learned a lot about. Within these religions we see some differences and some similarities that one could relate the two with, and one of those is the term Dharma. When examining Dharma in both Hinduism and Buddhism, people may notice that they are somewhat similar, but they will also see that there even more differences within this term. To better understand this term, we must first define it within the religion and then see what they have in common with one another, if nything at all, and finally notice where the big differences are between them. Dharma is a powerful word, but some may see it differently then others depending on their religion, or their understanding of the religion at hand. So to better understand this term we must first define the term specific to each religion. First we look at Hinduism, here Dharma is defined as, the most basic concept of Hinduism. It is a wide-ranging term for righteousness, law, duty, moral teachings, religion itself, or the order in the universe. (Voorst, 72). It goes on to say that, Dharma is also the god ho embodies and promotes right order and living(Voorst, 72). This in itself is not especially self-explanatory, but we will go into further detail after learning the meaning of the word in the Buddhist religion. The meaning for Dharma for Buddhists is quite different, this world view the dharma, law, teaching about the universe and the release from it. (Voorst, 1 19), so Just looking at the definitions we can see that they can relate but we need to look further to see the differences. First we look at how these two religions use the term Dharma in the same way. We an start with the laws and teachings within the religions, and how they can go hand in hand with one another. The purpose is to guide the followers in a way of living, to provide for a better reincarnation. In Hinduism the teachings are passed down year after year for centuries in order for people to follow, so that at the end of life, they can come back as a better (or worse depending on the way in which they lived) living creature. Then in Buddhism it follows the same guidelines, to teach the ways in which to live the best life. Which brings us to the next commonality between the religions, which is the art of reincarnation. Both the Hindus and Buddhists follow a cycle of reincarnation (samsara), to follow the religious recommendations in hope that the next life they live is better then the one this time around, and ever moving forward toward one day finding their way out of rebirth called: moksha in Hindu terms and nirvana in Buddhist terms. After learning the basic ways of the religions and how they can go hand in hand, we have to look at what makes them a religion apart. While we can for sure see these religions can relate to one another, we need to look further to get the difference. The main difference is the way in which the eachings are learned and understood. In Hinduism the teachings come from being passed on over time, and having specific duties; as to where and who you are in life, specific to ones place in the world; ones social position or caste membership, stage of life or gender(Voorst, 72). This is showing that Dharma of a wife is very different from that of her husband or child, and a worriers dharma is very different of that of a teachings of Buddha himself, to believe that, he taught his followers to think for themselves and carefully examine the teachings of the religion to determine what is ight for them(Voorst, 106). So we can see that in one religion we have life set out the way it should be lived and in the other people are free to live the way that they see fit within their religion. The next main difference is the actual being of the dharma. In Hinduism Dharma is not only seen as the way in which people should live, but also as the god Vishnu or Rama. Here we see the term dharma as, the preserver of dharma who takes worldly form (avatara) to combat threats to dharma,(lecture, 9/16). It was also said that, Rama, was a heroic king who, along with his spouse exemplifies harma,(lecture, 9/16). This is very different then that of the Buddhists, because they believe that, what Buddha discovered, is that which makes him the awakened one,(lecture, 9/23) So we see that it is somewhat of the reverse from Hinduism, because it is not represented or upheld through gods, but that which brought them their god to worship. So again we see clearly that these two religions are not as closely related as people may think. After spending a good amount of time, it is easy to see that the two meanings of dharma are different within the same context outline. They both deal with the rights nd wrongs of the people within the religion, and they both have, in one aspect, the same meaning; law and teachings. But when we gape deeper into the word, the way of life in Hinduism is dharma, but the Buddhist Just follow certain aspects of dharma in their religion.
